Times May Change, but Financial Principles Remain the Same

Most young people inherit the same mindsets and attitudes about money that their parents and grandparents had.

In the early 1990s, I read an article in Money Magazine stating that more than 70% of the population at that time was living paycheck to paycheck. The article explained that the majority of American families were overloaded with debt, had no savings, and were spending more than one-third (34%) of their income on payments for existing debt.
It also emphasized that most people had no time or resources left to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others—their energy was consumed entirely on their own survival.
Fast forward to today, and despite living in a different generation with different economic conditions, the situation has barely changed.

The Numbers Haven’t Improved

A recent survey revealed that more than 70% of Americans with good jobs are still living paycheck to paycheck—meaning they have little or no money left after paying their monthly bills.

• 72% of those earning less than $50,000 live paycheck to paycheck.
• Nearly 40% of those earning over $100,000 per year also live paycheck to paycheck.

Even more alarming, 70% of millennials (ages 25–40) earning $50,000 or more are living paycheck to paycheck as well (The Lending Club Bank, June 15, 2021).

These statistics mirror the numbers from the 1990s almost exactly. More than 70% of the population continues to struggle financially—regardless of income level or economic conditions. People are making the same financial mistakes today that they made decades ago, even though we live in a completely different era.

Why are so many people struggling with their personal and business finances? What is it that the successful 30% understand that the struggling 70% do not? What money management principles must we learn to protect ourselves, our families, and our businesses from repeating the same costly mistakes?
